Startups employ an average of 21 employees

Startups have become significant employers in recent years. On average, a startup currently has 21 employees. Only a small percentage plan to reduce their headcount due to the crisis.

Only 6 percent of the Digital Association Startups surveyed by Bitkom expect the number of employees to decline this year, while the clear majority of 57 percent expect the number of employees to continue to rise.

"The idea of a startup as a one- or two-person operation in a home basement has absolutely nothing to do with reality. Startups are significant employers, creating highly qualified jobs, especially for software developers, but also in all other areas such as marketing or sales,"

says Bitkom President Achim Berg.

Every second startup is looking for new employees

“Especially in startup hotspots such as Berlin, Munich, Hamburg or even Cologne and Frankfurt, startups play an important role for the entire economy,”

said Berg. 43 percent of startups surveyed currently have fewer than ten employees, but around one in four has 20 or more. Despite the coronavirus crisis, 49 percent of startups currently have open positions. At the beginning of the year, the number was 63 percent. More than two out of three companies surveyed reported problems finding suitable applicants.
