Munich has Germany's most charging points for electric cars

Munich's municipal utility company (SWM) now operates 1,100 charging points. This means there are more charging options for electric cars in Munich than in any other German city. The expansion continues.

With a total of 550 charging stations, each capable of supplying two electric cars simultaneously, the Bavarian capital now offers more charging points than the previous leader, Hamburg, according to the German Association of the Energy and Water Industries. The Mayor of Munich Dieter Reiter says:

"Public transport is and remains the backbone of our mobility. Journeys beyond the subway, bus, and tram should be as climate-friendly as possible. That's why we're promoting electric mobility. The expansion of public charging infrastructure is a central element of our municipal funding program."

With more and more charging options and the strengthening of local and bicycle transport, Munich is driving the transport transition, says Reiter.

"And we will continue on this successful path. Because only in this way can we ensure a livable Munich for future generations."

60 more charging points planned this year

SWM and MVG have operated public charging stations for electric vehicles in Munich since 2009. Since 2017, the municipal companies have been massively expanding the charging infrastructure on behalf of the state capital. This year, 60 additional standard charging points are scheduled to open, and the number of rapid charging stations is expected to increase to up to 18. All SWM charging points use CO2-free green electricity. Florian Bieberbach, Chairman of the SWM Management Board, says:

"We have been working on the success of the energy transition since 2008, even before it was called the energy transition. We are very successful in green electricity generation, as well as in the expansion of geothermal energy. We have also already achieved a lot in climate-friendly mobility: In addition to public charging stations, we offer charging solutions for home garages or company parking spaces."

The municipal utilities are also increasingly replacing combustion engines with electric vehicles in their own fleet, according to Bieberach.
