Localstoring: Airbnb for storage space

One has an empty basement compartment, another doesn't know what to do with his belongings. A perfect starting point for the Localstoring platform. We asked the three founders our 7 questions.

Munich Startup: Who are you and what do you do? Please briefly introduce yourself and your product/service!

Localstoring: Hi! We are Julius (23), Janis (27) and Stefan (24) from Localstoring — the Airbnb for storage spaces. The three of us have known each other since school and are a well-coordinated team. Julius, an industrial engineer, handles management and financial matters, while Janis, the backend developer, handles all programming. Stefan, a former SAP employee, handles front-end development, design, UI, and marketing. Our business model connects private landlords with those seeking storage space. Renters can store their belongings right in their neighborhood and at up to 80 percent less than with traditional self-storage providers. Landlords monetize their unused space without compromising their privacy. All users are verified, and their belongings are insured.

“As a marketplace, you always have the chicken-and-egg problem”

Munich Startup: But that's been around for a long time!

Localstoring: Not from private to private! Self-storage providers, like hotels, have the disadvantage compared to Airbnb in that they have to pay for expensive real estate, management, and cleaning staff, making them much more expensive. With our private offerings, we're creating completely new options on the market. From half-empty basement units, attics, former children's rooms, garages, and barns, we've got it all. So if any of you have some space left in your shared basement or similar, start earning money with it—it's incredibly easy, and as a landlord, you have complete control over access types and desired income (landlords pay us €0)!

Munich Startup: What has been your biggest challenge so far?

Localstoring: As a marketplace, you always have the chicken-and-egg problem. We have to scale and match landlords and tenants simultaneously. If we don't have tenants, we won't find landlords, and vice versa. Therefore, we currently need to achieve a critical mass of available listings in Munich.

Munich Startup: Let’s get down to business: How is business going?

Localstoring: We've been live for three weeks now and are currently focusing on building the supply page in Munich. We currently have over 50 listings and are receiving very positive feedback. So, you could say things are going well!

Localstoring: The “Place for Space”

Munich Startup: What does Munich mean to you?

The three of us are native Munich residents and are therefore proud to have our company headquarters here. LMU EC Accelerator Program, in which we have been for about 2 months, and other strong startup networks, Munich is of course very interesting for us as a startup.

Munich Startup: How can your startup become the next unicorn? Or will we see you soon at Epic Fail Night?

Localstoring: Localstoring's long-term vision is to become the "Place for Space." From boat moorings and private aircraft hangars to classic car parking spaces, the platform can be set up very broadly. We are therefore confident that we will become the market leader among private providers in many of these markets. We are currently in the first round of financing to enable even faster growth with the capital raised.
