Hans Sauer Prize 2019: Apply now!

How can the linear pattern of "make, use, waste" be overcome? How can materials and things be used in a circular fashion instead? These are precisely the questions that this year's Hans Sauer Prize addresses. Ideas and concepts addressing the topic "Designing Circular Society — Thinking in Cycles" can be submitted until January 15, 2019.

Thinking and acting in linear categories is a societal phenomenon that extends from raw material extraction and product manufacturing to people's lifestyles and behavior. Redesigning this way of thinking and acting requires far more than just technical or product-oriented approaches: Rather, it also involves redesigning social practices, societal structures, and cultural patterns, since patterns of production, use, and reuse are essentially determined by design. In this respect, this year's Hans Sauer Prize is seeking solutions and possibilities from the field of design that can contribute to sustainably changing thinking and acting.

Who can participate and what can be submitted?

Anyone interested in the topic is invited to participate, whether private individuals, startups, non-profit organizations, companies, universities, or research institutions. Team and group submissions are also permitted. Participation is limited to German-speaking countries, i.e., Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein.

Among other things, concrete products that are characterized by durability, reusability, and circularity on a material and technical level are eligible for submission. Concepts that are plausible for implementation and whose recycling potential is estimable are also welcome. An overview of all possible submissions can be found here.

The following questions should cover all submissions:

• To what extent does the project/concept promote or create circular processes?
• At what point in the cycle does the project/concept start?
• What strategy does the project/concept pursue?
• What concrete improvements can be demonstrated / are to be expected?

Would you like to participate?
