News from Sono Motors: The Munich-based mobility startup awards a major contract for several hundred million euros for the development and production of a own battery for their solar vehicle “Sion” to the German
Automotive supplier ElringKlinger.
Sono Motors announces its partnership with the German automotive supplier ElringKlinger for the development and production of battery systems. The total contract volume amounts to several hundred million euros over a term of approximately eight years.
“Important milestone on the way to series production”
In choosing a domestic location for the production of the battery storage system, climate protection and working conditions are key considerations for the company. Sono Motors will offset all unavoidable greenhouse gas emissions by supporting certified climate protection projects.
“The announcement of the partnership with ElringKlinger marks an important milestone on the way to series production,”
so Laurin Hahn, Co-founder and Managing Director of Sono Motors.
“The battery market is currently presenting the entire automotive industry with major
Challenges. The nomination of the battery supplier sends an important signal to our community and the many people who have already reserved a Sion,"
Hahn adds further.
When selecting the partner, particular attention was paid to issues such as social
Standards and sustainability are a priority. Production in Germany and partner ElringKlinger ensured these were taken into account.
"We were very impressed by ElringKlinger's expertise and professionalism. A fully automated production line should also ensure cost-efficient production and demonstrate that manufacturing in Germany can also make economic sense,"
explained Roberto Diesel, CTO of Sono Motors.
Register now for a test drive
Last summer, Sono Motors unveiled the innovative and family-friendly Sion solar car. The Sion is a self-charging electric car that, thanks to solar cells integrated into the body, feeds solar energy into the battery for up to 30 additional kilometers per day. With a battery range of 250 km suitable for everyday use, a purchase price (without battery) of €16,000, and integrated sharing functions, the vehicle is intended to appeal particularly to families and city commuters. The battery will be offered on a rental basis or as a one-time purchase. The vehicle can be charged either via a conventional socket, via a Type 2 connector, or via a rapid charging station within 30 minutes.
To date, Sono Motors has received nearly 4,000 paid vehicle reservations. As the company recently announced, a nationwide test drive tour will begin in mid-May. The compact van will be available for test drives in 17 cities. You can register for this on the Sono Motors website.
