Cultural and Creative Cities Monitor: Munich ranks second in Europe

The EU Commission has compared Europe's cultural and creative locations. Among the 21 cities with a population of over a million, Munich ranks second behind Paris.

The study examined 168 cities from the 28 countries of the European Union, as well as Switzerland and Norway. The selection includes a total of 15 German cities. Participation is conditional on the cities actively promoting their cultural and creative industries. The participating cities were then grouped according to their size and compared only with competitors of similar size.

In the league of "XXL cities" with more than one million inhabitants, Munich ranks second overall. The Bavarian capital is only beaten by the global metropolis of Paris. Munich achieved its best individual result—also second behind Paris—in the creative industries subcategory. The strong presence of the publishing industry, with approximately 250 branches, and Munich's extensive music offering contributed significantly to this top ranking.

Creative industries are an important factor for Munich

A Data report Last year demonstrated the great importance of the cultural and creative industries for Munich's economy: Almost 101,000,000 of all self-employed people and businesses in the metropolitan region are active in the cultural and creative industries, as are 41,000,000 of employees subject to social insurance contributions. 3,800,000 of Munich's economic output comes from the creative industry.
