Hidden champions? World export champions? German over-engineering? Despite an impressive history, there are quite a few who predict a slow decline for German SMEs after decades of praise and convenience. It's not for nothing that the BBC asks, "Can German manufacturers go digital?"
Unresolved succession issues, a talent shortage, and digitalization pose major challenges for the entire economy. However, small and medium-sized businesses appear to be particularly affected. Vast amounts of expertise and potential are pitted against pure efficiency management, patriarchal leadership structures, and a desperate clinging to the good old days. Yet the German startup scene is also accorded only a minor role compared to foreign strongholds. Critics disparagingly refer to the "Berlin Copycat System" and point to the truly few innovative German startups that have established themselves sustainably in the market alongside food delivery services and digital moving apps.
Germany's economy is still doing well. However, experts agree that today's success hardly guarantees survival tomorrow. The changes that lie ahead appear too complex. But what is preventing Germany's business landscape from fully exploiting its innovation potential? What must small and medium-sized businesses do to continue their success story? And what needs to happen in our country's startup hotspots for German "unicorns" to conquer the global market? Can Germany be a "Future Champion"?
