The breakthrough 2017 award was presented last night in Munich. With this award, WEKA MEDIA PUBLISHING supports startups on their path to success with media services totaling €500,000 and €17,000 in cash prizes. All startups whose products or services have already been launched or will be launched in 2017 were eligible to participate.
Breakthrough – the name of the award should ideally reflect its program. At least according to the initiator of the award, WEKA MEDIA PUBLISHING, is going on. With its support, it wants to help young companies achieve a breakthrough.
Community was allowed to decide
Interested startups could apply for the breakthrough 2017 award until October 31, 2016. From November 2 to December 31, 2016, an online voting took place on the portals of the Weka Media Publishing group, such as connect.de, pc-magazin.de, video.de, audio.de, and colorfoto.de. The community was able to decide which products and services would be shortlisted for the breakthrough 2017 award.
From the top rankings of the internet voting, a jury, which was composed of scientists, investors, founders and business leaders, the three winners of the breakthrough 2017 award.

The first place took the livyu GmbHShe was honored for her CouchFestival application. CouchFestival brings live concert experiences into every living room thanks to innovative virtual reality technology: With standard VR glasses, viewers sit in the front row and can enjoy the spectacular 360-degree panoramic view or peek backstage. The jury sees potential here to revolutionize the entire entertainment industry. As a prize, livyu will receive €300,000, €10,000, and 200,000 Edgar Cards for media services in online and print media from WEKA Media Publishing.
The Munich startup also landed on the podium User laneThe technology developed by Userlane guides users through software like a navigation system, enabling people to use any program without a learning curve. WEKA MEDIA PUBLISHING is supporting the startup with a media grant of €150,000, a cash prize of €5,000, and 100,000 Edgar Cards.
And last but not least in 3rd place: Digitack GmbH with their app MyFoodHero.
The jury’s reasoning:
The MyFoodHero app connects stores looking to get rid of food nearing its best-before date with potential customers who can purchase it at a discounted price. Every click brings the founders a commission.
The company from Stratsund can look forward to 50,000 euros in media performance, a 2,000 euro cash prize and 50,000 Edgar Cards.
