Munich Startup: What does your startup do? What problem do you solve?
In total: Insempra is a Biotechnology companies, which develops bio-based ingredients using fermentation. Our goal is to replace petrochemical raw materials with sustainable alternatives that impress with superior quality and functionality. We focus on applications in the cosmetics, food, and textile industries. Our products offer companies the opportunity to make their product formulations more environmentally friendly and thus actively support the transition to a regenerative future.

In total: Sustainable alternatives are nothing new – but many are either difficult to scale or fail to meet the high standards of major brands in terms of quality, availability, and functionality. This is precisely where we come in: Our ingredients combine innovation with real industrial feasibility. What drives us is the growing demand for sustainable solutions that are bio-based and naturally produced. Consumers demand this – and we provide the building blocks.

Munich Startup: What is your founding story?
In total: Before Insempra, our founder, Jens Klein, was CEO of AMSilk, the world's first supplier of vegan silk polymers. From this experience, it became clear to him that if biotechnology is to make a real difference, it must be conceived and applied industrially. This is how the idea for Insempra was born in 2020 – with the vision of developing biotechnological solutions that are sustainable, scalable, and market-ready.
Munich Startup: What have been your biggest challenges so far?
In total: One of the greatest challenges is bringing biotechnology and market readiness together – both must go hand in hand. This requires a strong team that combines scientific depth with entrepreneurial thinking. Today, we employ experts from 15 nations who work with passion and expertise to continuously develop our platform and set new standards for bio-based innovation.

Munich Startup: Where would you like to be in one year, where in five years?
In total: In a year we would like to present our first Ingredients We see this successful in the market – in real products that demonstrate what bio-based innovation can achieve. In five years, we want to be established as a technology partner for companies worldwide that want to produce more sustainably – whether in the cosmetics, food, or materials industries.
Munich Startup: How have you experienced Munich as a startup location so far?
In total: Munich offers optimal conditions for biotech: strong scientific institutions, international talent, an ever-growing network, and good infrastructure. We are located at the IZB in Martinsried – a place where research, startups, and industry truly come together. The exchange there is incredibly valuable, and we greatly appreciate the proximity to institutions like the Max Planck Institute and Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich.
