Orbem raises €30 million in Series A

The Munich-based startup Orbem combines imaging technologies with artificial intelligence to tackle complex problems. With its AI innovation for scanning biological samples, the young company has already brought a solution to market that contributes to sustainability in the poultry industry. Now, Orbem has successfully completed a €30 million Series A financing round.

Venture capital firm 83North is leading the €30 million financing round. New investor La Famiglia Orbem is supporting the venture, along with existing investors The Venture Collective, Possible Ventures and Dr. Rüdiger Schmidt. Investors also include several prominent German entrepreneurs, including Personio co-founders Hanno Renner, Roman Schumacher, and Chief Operating Officer Jonas Rieke; former Zalando CEO Rubin Ritter; Forto co-founders Michael Wax, Erik Muttersbach, and Chief Operating Officer Dr. Michael Ardelt; Kinexon co-founders Dr. Alexander Hüttenbrink and Dr. Oliver Trinchera; and Bastian Nominacher, Co-CEO and Co-Founder of Celonis.

With the help of the AI-assisted MRI technology of deeptech Various biological samples such as food, plant species, building materials, and the human body can be scanned. The AI essentially takes over the tasks of technicians and radiologists. This makes MRI procedures significantly faster and attractive for a number of previously untapped markets.

The Series A round follows the market launch of Orbem Genus Focus, a product that determines the sex of a chicken egg completely non-invasively. This eliminates the controversial practice of culling male chicks. The startup claims to have already convinced leading poultry producers, achieved profitability, and scanned more than 21 million eggs.

“Solving the world’s biggest challenges with AI-powered imaging”

"Our mission is to use AI-powered imaging for everything and everyone. We believe this is the best way to achieve our primary goal of shedding light on the world's greatest challenges. With €30 million in funding, we have the greatest possible flexibility to realize our vision of using AI-powered imaging to sustainably improve global food security, accelerate the transition to a green economy, and transform disease detection."

says Pedro Gómez, Co-founder and CEO of Orbem. Gil Goren, General Partner at 83North, commented on the investment:

"The era of digitalization, groundbreaking technological innovation, and the AI revolution offers companies a unique opportunity to solve real-world challenges and build solid, independent businesses. Orbem has harnessed AI to industrialize MRI technology, unlocking its potential to revolutionize food production, accelerate the transition to a sustainable economy, and improve disease detection. It is a great pleasure for me to join this amazing team on their journey to a better world."
