Cazoo sells Cluno to Vive La Car

The British online car dealer Cazoo acquired the Munich-based mobility startup Cluno at the beginning of 2021. They are now selling it to Stuttgart-based Vive La Car.

Cluno was founded in 2017 and has since offered cars for a monthly package price. The rate covers all costs except fuel: maintenance, wear and tear, seasonal tires, warranty, registration, vehicle tax, fully comprehensive insurance, and vehicle inspections. This subscription approach is intended to provide a flexible alternative to traditional car ownership. For Cazoo, the purchase of the Munich startup the step into the German market, and the integration of the two services was intended to bring the Cluno offering to Great Britain.

Now Cazoo announced that it has sold Cluno to the Stuttgart-based company Vive La Car which, in turn, is majority-owned by The Platform Group. With the sale, the British company is withdrawing from the German market and thus largely ending its business on the European mainland. The purchase price was not disclosed.

The purchase of Cluno is intended to consolidate Vive La Car’s leading position

The Stuttgart-based mobility startup Vive La Car also offers car subscriptions. As part of the acquisition, all Cluno employees and the brand rights will be transferred to the company. Mathias R. Albert, founder and CEO of Vive La Car, explains:

"I am delighted that our vision of becoming the leading full-service car subscription provider in Europe is taking shape and that the acquisition of Cluno will enable us to consolidate and expand our leading position."

Dominik Benner, Managing Director of Vive La Car parent company The Platform Group, adds:

"We are delighted that Vive La Car can expand its leading role in the car subscription market with the acquisition of Cluno. This has made Vive La Car the leading platform within just three years. Our full focus is now on growth and expanding our partner network."
