The Bitkom-Ifo Digital Index measures the current business situation in the digital sector, business expectations for the coming months, and the combined index of both. Business expectations in the IT and communications sector, in particular, have recently developed positively, rising by 2.6 points to the current positive value of 2.0 points. The business situation climbed by 1.2 points in January to 36.4 points. The business climate reached 18.5 points in January, compared to 16.6 points in December 2022 and only 5.9 points in November.
“Signs in the digital industry point to growth again”
Bitkom President Achim Berg says:
"The signs in the digital sector are pointing toward growth again. This is good news for Germany as a business location as a whole, because with 1.35 million employees, IT and telecommunications companies are a significant employer."
For the overall economy, the Ifo Institute reports a business climate that remains negative at -2.9 points. The business situation is assessed at 14.4 points, slightly worse than the previous month's 15.2 points. Meanwhile, business expectations for the overall economy recovered slightly from -25.6 to -18.8 points, but remain significantly negative.
