Marvel Fusion and LMU jointly research laser-based nuclear fusion

Marvel Fusion and Ludwig Maximilian University (LMU) will collaborate in the field of laser research. The Free State of Bavaria is supporting the collaboration with 2.5 million euros.

Marvel Fusion and the LMU want to Munich startup to research the approach to laser-based nuclear fusion developed by Marvel Fusion. This approach is intended to enable a safe, clean, and reliable energy supply in the future. As part of the five-year collaboration, one of the world's most powerful laser systems at LMU will also be upgraded. This will enable previously unfeasible experiments with which Marvel Fusion can validate important parameters of its laser-based fusion technology. The Bavarian Minister of Science Markus Blume says about the collaboration:

"This 'fusion' is a signpost to a new era: Nuclear fusion was always a dream, but with scientific progress, concrete hope is now beginning. Laser-induced inertial fusion of hydrogen and boron enables clean nuclear fusion. This has the potential to revolutionize energy production. Europe needs sovereignty in this field. In Bavaria, we have courage and are doing pioneering work: The partnership between LMU and Marvel Fusion exudes entrepreneurial spirit and technological progress!"

“Cooperation with LMU is a milestone for Marvel Fusion”

The startup, founded in 2019, aims to make laser-initiated nuclear fusion usable as a commercial energy source. George Korn, physicist and Chief Technology Officer of Marvel Fusion, says:

"Laser-based fusion technology can make a decisive contribution to the energy transition and European energy sovereignty because it enables the production of unlimited, CO2-free electricity. The collaboration with LMU is a milestone for Marvel Fusion because it brings us a big step closer to the goal of commercial electricity production using laser-based fusion technology."
