Alternative forms of financing beyond investors and equity are becoming increasingly popular in the startup scene. Crowdfunding is arguably one of the more well-known forms of alternative financing. However, even though collaboration with the crowd has already been successfully used as a springboard for many startups, it is still a relatively new phenomenon and has not yet been thoroughly researched. However, crowdfunding is now increasingly gaining academic attention.
The researchers have taken a first step in this direction Andreea Gorbatai and Laura Nelson with their study "The Narrative Advantage: Gender and the Language of Crowdfunding (PDF)." In it, they investigated which linguistic patterns are responsible for the success of crowdfunding projects and whether project descriptions written by female or male crowdfunders perform better. The result: campaigns by women are, on average, more successful than those by men.
