Rentflix: “We close the gap between use and ownership”

Apartments, offices, cars – many sharing concepts have been successful for a long time. And what works on a large scale should also be possible on a small scale. That's why the Munich-based startup Rentflix focuses on things that often just lie around unused: drones, cameras, game consoles, and much more. We spoke with the founders.

Munich Startup: Who are you and what does Rentflix do? Please introduce yourselves briefly!

Rentflix: We are Kilian and Jigar, the founders of Rentflix. Kilian is 18 years old and studying electrical engineering at the Technical University of Munich. He is also the CEO of Rentflix. He came up with the idea for the Rentflix sharing platform around April 2020. He started developing the idea while still in high school.

Kilian established the Startup Community Munich Valley two years ago. Its goal is to connect the startup community in Munich. Facebook group now has over 2500 members.

Jigar joined the team in August of last year. He's Rentflix's CTO and has over 16 years of experience in software development. We took our time at the beginning to figure out which market niche we wanted to focus on.

Rentflix is a sharing platform for the items you love! Need a Nintendo Switch, GoPro, or drone for your long-awaited vacation? No problem! Simply rent your items on a daily basis. You can also rent out items on our platform!

Both businesses and individuals can be landlords on our sharing platform. This means you can rent out your items on Rentflix and earn extra money. We encourage everyone to try out Rentflix and list their own items.

Be flexible and live sustainably

Munich Startup: What problem does your startup solve?

Rentflix: We close the gap between using and owning. With the ever-increasing number of items on the market, it's impossible to buy everything. Let alone where to store them. With Rentflix, you stay flexible and live more sustainably!

Munich Startup: But that's been around for a long time!

Rentflix: Not really! In the sharing economy, there have only been a few small projects in recent years. But with Rentflix, we're aiming for the big picture. That's why we don't want to limit ourselves to major cities. Rentflix has been available throughout Germany from the start! Our focus, however, is clearly on German metropolitan regions like Munich, Berlin, Hamburg, etc.

Munich Startup: Has there ever been a point where you almost failed?

Rentflix: Kilian has already launched several projects before. However, Rentflix is the first platform he's built. The challenge is bringing both landlords and tenants to our platform in large numbers. We had a lot of trouble with this, especially in the beginning. However, with new experiences, our success rate has improved. Now it's all about finding as many tenants as possible while maintaining the same range of listings.

Rentflix focuses on expansion

Munich Startup: Where would you like to be in one year, where in five years?

Rentflix: Our focus at Rentflix is expansion and the best product in the world. We're currently working on the Rentflix app for Android and iOS, which is expected to be released around September. With the app, we'll make the entire rental experience much easier, faster, and more secure. In one year, we plan to have a high density of listed properties across Germany. In short, Rentflix will be available throughout Germany in one year!

Over the next five years, we plan to be active not only in Germany, but also worldwide. Our goal is to expand the sharing concept to various regions: "Rentflix accelerates the transition to a circular economy!"

Munich Startup: How do you rate Munich as a startup location?

Rentflix: Kilian has with the Munich Valley We established a startup community over a year ago. We've now grown to over 2,500 members. We're convinced that Munich is gaining popularity as a location. Some are already calling it the Silicon Valley of Germany. Startups and disruptive companies from the aerospace, AI, and robotics sectors can be found in Munich. Munich is strong in the technology sector, especially in conjunction with the university. I'm excited to see how we'll look back on our forecast in five years.

Munich Startup: Coworking or your own office?

Rentflix: Coworking spaces, of course! We're currently located at WeWork on Oskar-von-Miller-Ring in Munich. The advantage of coworking is networking and connecting. It's so easy to meet new people from different backgrounds. It's also less expensive than having your own office, and they offer more services. At WeWork, for example, free coffee and snacks are included!

We can only advise everyone to Coworking spaces In our opinion, it's worth it!
