Ideas competition 'Municipal? Digital!' seeks Bavaria's digital musketeers

How can municipalities become more digital? With the "Municipal? Digital!" idea competition, the Bavarian State Ministry for Digital Affairs is searching for smart solutions. Startups can submit their ideas together with a municipality until February 12, 2021.

Bavaria's municipalities are to become smarter – to achieve this, the Bavarian State Ministry for Digital Affairs is relaunching the 'Municipal? Digital!' competition. This ideas competition aims to promote the best digital solutions that combine innovation and sustainability.

We are looking for flagship projects, i.e., previously unimplemented, innovative digital solutions with model character to address the challenges facing municipalities in the area of public services. Importantly, the solutions should be economical in the use of raw materials, time, and space. Digital Minister Judith Gerlach commented:

"We are looking for Bavaria's top ten smart ideas. Our cities and regions should become even more efficient, livable, and environmentally friendly. Digitalization is the key to this. We want to find Bavaria's digital musketeers who, following the motto 'One for all,' will develop and implement their digital idea, and ultimately make it available to all of Bavaria. From smart trash cans to intelligent lampposts to apps for organized carpooling, anything is conceivable. The smart core is important: the economical use of our most valuable resources: raw materials, space, and time."

Application process and prize

Startups working on such solutions can apply together with a Bavarian municipality for the Ideas competition Only municipalities, cities, rural districts, or counties in Bavaria are eligible to apply. Projects with a duration of up to three years will be considered. A total of €5 million in funding is available for up to 10 projects.

The application process will be divided into two stages: It will begin with a twelve-week call for project outlines (November 20, 2020, to February 12, 2021). Following a pre-selection, a detailed concept must be submitted by May 2021.

The award-winning municipalities will be selected by a jury chaired by Judith Gerlach, Minister of State for Digital Affairs. The award-winning municipalities will receive funding for the submitted project of up to €500,000.
