It is well known that Munich, with two universities and a university of applied sciences, is a very well-positioned scientific location and therefore also an attractive location for many startups. This is unlikely to change in the near future, as the two Munich universities can now once again participate in the Excellence Strategy Convince yourself in 2019.
Since the first round of the Excellence Competition organized by the German Federal and State Governments in 2006, the two Munich universities—Ludwig Maximilian University (LMU) and Technische Universität München (TUM)—have performed exceptionally well. It was therefore hardly surprising that both LMU and TUM have now been awarded funding as Universities of Excellence again.
After this round, a total of 11 German universities and university associations will be able to call themselves "Universities of Excellence." In addition to the prestigious title, the selected universities will also receive millions in government funding. The approved funding as a University of Excellence will initially run for seven years and will be continued after a successful interim evaluation.
Strength of Munich as a science location
In Munich, people are happy. LMU President Professor Bernd Huber says:
"The fact that LMU and TUM were awarded the commission's contract impressively reflects the strength of Munich as a center of science, in which numerous non-university research institutes, cultural institutions, companies and many other partners, as well as the ongoing support of the Free State of Bavaria, play a decisive role."
Prepared for the future
And TUM President Wolfgang A. Herrmann — who will hand over his presidency to Thomas Hofmann on October 1, 2019, after 24 years — says:
"The profound, consistent reforms of two decades have proven us right; we have set new standards in many ways. This means we are prepared for the future at the highest level."
Both universities have also been active in the field of entrepreneurship promotion for several years. The LMU with the LMU Entrepreneurship Center and the TUM with the UnternehmerTUM.
