Munich offers the highest quality of life in Germany

As in previous years, Munich is the city with the highest quality of life in Germany in 2019. Worldwide, Munich ranks third among the most livable cities.

Only Vienna and Zurich rank ahead of Munich in the Mercer consulting firm's ranking. Auckland and Vancouver are on a par with the Bavarian capital. As in the previous years, the bottom of the list of all 231 major cities is previous years Baghdad. European metropolises dominate the global ranking: eight European cities are in the top ten, and a full 16 are in the top 25.

Three German cities among the ten most livable in the world

Munich is not only one of the cities in the world with the highest quality of life, but according to Mercer, it is also the most livable city in Germany. With Düsseldorf in sixth place and Frankfurt am Main in seventh, two other German cities make it into the global top ten. Berlin ranks 13th, Hamburg in 19th, Nuremberg ranks 23rd, Stuttgart in 27th, and Leipzig in 60th.

The study authors analyzed a total of 39 factors. The focus was on aspects that are central to expatriate employees. Grouped into ten categories, these factors include social, political, economic, and environmental aspects. Additional criteria include health, education, transportation, and other public services.

The study pays particular attention to personal safety. German cities perform comparatively well in this area. Crime rates are low, law enforcement is efficient, and social and political conditions are stable. Ulrike Hellenkamp von Mercer says:

“Munich also offers an excellent range of international schools, a good urban infrastructure, and a wide range of leisure activities – an aspect that is very attractive to younger expatriates.”
