Materialrest24: Munich startup wins German Raw Material Efficiency Award

Since 2011, the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy has honored outstanding examples of resource- and material-efficient products, processes, or services, as well as application-oriented research results, with the German Raw Material Efficiency Award. Now, a Munich-based startup, Materialrest24, can also celebrate receiving this award.

For several years now, companies and research institutions that have developed particularly valuable technologies and processes for resource-efficient management have been honored with the German Raw Material Efficiency Award by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. Among the current winners are Beermann Umwelttechnik from Hörstel, Watttron from Freital, and the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg, as well as Materialrest24 from Munich.

Modern circular economy contributes to securing raw materials

The Parliamentary State Secretary Oliver Wittke, who personally congratulated the winners at the award ceremony in Berlin, explains the background of the Raw Material Efficiency Award:

"Our industry depends on a secure supply of raw materials. Intelligent and sustainable use of resources contributes decisively to a modern circular economy and thus to securing raw materials. The award winners honored today are exemplary examples of innovative achievements in this field."

Resource-saving in the construction industry

Using raw materials more effectively together in the construction trade — this is the topic that Materialrest24 is dedicated to. The background: construction materials are sometimes only available in large containers, and these quantities are not always needed. The Munich-based startup wants to change this and has developed a online platform developed for craft businesses, allowing leftover materials to be reused for follow-up orders. Products that are no longer manufactured or have long delivery times can also be effectively sold between craft businesses.

Next prize in sight?

Materialrest24 could soon be at another award ceremony, as the Munich-based company has been nominated for the Zeit-Wissen Award “Courage for Sustainability 2019” in the category “Take Off” nominated. Whether the startup can convince again will be revealed at the end of March in Hamburg.
