The German Association of Digital Economy (BVDW) has published eight guidelines for dealing with artificial intelligence (AI). These cover areas such as digital ethics, challenges for the labor market, and the exchange between business, politics, and society.
The "Artificial Intelligence Expert Panel" within the digital association has agreed on eight guidelines for dealing with artificial intelligence. BVDW Vice President Marco Zingler says:
"AI is a competitive factor in economics. However, the focus is no longer solely on the technical possibilities offered by AI. We aim to approach its development in a much more holistic manner. The focus is no longer just on what AI can do, but increasingly also on what it should not be able to do."
The association aims to initiate an exchange on equal terms, involving society, business and politics.
“To remain globally competitive, the European digital economy must act as a united front,”
demands the BVDW Vice President.
Zingler: AI influences numerous business models and also social life
Zingler believes that clarifying fundamental ethical questions is a prerequisite for the technology's breakthrough. He explains:
"This requires trust, which the industry can only achieve through transparency and continuous education. Massive changes are to be expected, especially in the labor market—here, we as an industry have a responsibility to establish new job profiles to compensate for lost jobs and to work towards developing appropriate AI skills."
According to Zingler, AI offers enormous potential for Germany as an industrial location in terms of efficiency, for example in industrial manufacturing processes — if the relevant regulatory framework allows it.
“With our guidelines, we provide important guidance to the digital economy.”
In many discussions, AI is confused with pure automation. However, this does not do justice to the potential of this development, according to the association representative. The actual possibility of imitating human-like decision-making processes through software represents a paradigm shift. Therefore, artificial intelligence is more of a basic innovation that will influence numerous business models and even social life.
