How a construction site goes digital – 7 questions for… Intefra!

A pitch from the Munich-based startup Intefra would probably begin like this: 'Imagine a highway construction site. The first thing you probably think of is huge construction vehicles, traffic jams, construction workers milling around, and a lot of noise.' Intefra wants to change the fact that few people think of digitalization when they think of a construction site. There's great potential here, as the construction industry is one of the least digitized sectors in Germany.

1. Who are you and what do you do? Please briefly introduce yourself and your company!

At Intefra We are working on the digitalization of construction sites. Our particular focus is on detection for autonomous vehicles or vehicles with driver assistance, as well as safety for both road users and construction workers. Because construction sites are more complex than they seem at first glance.

Using sensors in the beacons—or warning lights—we can collect important data, such as the exact location and length of the construction site. We then forward this data to autonomous vehicles and traffic safety companies.

Our team consists of Christian Pietrulla (Technological and Management-Oriented Business Administration), Armin Wörner (Computer Science), Sebastian Kaluza (Civil and Industrial Engineering), Max Falkner (Technical Chemistry) and me, Marc Hartmann (Technological and Management-Oriented Business Administration).

2. But that's been around for a long time!

So far, only a few companies have focused on digitizing construction sites. Therefore, we are pleased to be able to add another use case to our technology.

Digitizing construction sites with humor and passion

3. What are the three main ingredients for your recipe for success?

A fun-loving team! Because without a functioning team with whom you can have fun and generally do things, you won't get very far. Communication is extremely important, especially in the early stages, which is why we maintain good relationships and exchange with one another.

Passionate about our work! Each of us believes in Intefra and is committed to giving our all so we can grow in the future. Everyone contributes new ideas, approaches, and possible solutions, which allows us to solve many problems quickly and efficiently.

Die Zeit! Construction sites have not been a big winner from digitalization so far. Today's construction sites benefit little from the technological possibilities available. We envision a modern construction site as more efficient and believe that now is the right time to enter the industry.

4. Let’s get down to business: How is business going?

We're currently in the prototype phase, which is why we haven't generated any sales yet. Initial tests will be conducted on a suitable track this winter to make the prototypes market-ready.

5. What does Munich mean to you?

The entire team studied in Munich. We're therefore connected to the city and have all built a life here. Furthermore, the startup scene is currently thriving here, making Munich a great location to start a business.

“With a little luck, a great product”

6. How will your startup become the next unicorn? Or will we see you soon at Epic Fail Night?

Unfortunately, you can never rule out an epic fail. Nevertheless, we're all absolutely convinced that we're working on an idea that, with a bit of luck, will become a great product.

7. Helles or Prosecco?

Light beer, of course! How dare you ask that question in Munich?
