A survey by Bitkom shows that German startups are important employers and create new jobs. On average, each startup employs 13 people. However, there are significant regional differences.
Munich startups create the most jobs
Munich startups create an average of 21 new jobs, compared to just six in Hamburg, while Berlin startups have 17 employees. Staff availability, qualifications, and costs are important for the majority of startup founders when choosing a location – with Munich scoring highly on the first two criteria.
In their first year, newly founded IT and internet companies in Germany have an average of six employees; after two to five years, this number rises to 14. And startups older than five years have an average of 25 employees.
Particularly important when choosing a location: personal reasons
For 60 percent of young entrepreneurs, the staffing situation plays a significant role in the selection of a location. For Munich startups, the most important factors are personal reasons such as proximity to family and quality of life The local infrastructure, along with the staffing situation, are among the main reasons they base their location decision on.
