Startup jobs: Munich ranks second according to study

A study by Joblift, a metasearch engine for job postings, examined the regional distribution of startup job postings in Germany. Munich ranks second after Berlin.

Berlin leads the results list with 451,000 job postings found. This is followed by Munich with 121,000, Hamburg with 61,000, Frankfurt with 41,000, and Düsseldorf with 31,000. One in three vacancies (301,000) is located in another city. The Munich commuter belt, including Garching, Unterschleißheim, Oberpfaffenhofen (Weßling), Martinsried, and many other municipalities, falls into this category. Nevertheless, the number of job postings found in Munich increased by an average of around 41,000 per month. The largest increase was recorded in Frankfurt (7,210). In contrast, the number of available startup jobs in the capital shrank by an average of just over 11,000 over the 12 months examined.

How meaningful is this?

It is not entirely clear what these study results actually say: Fintech Insider, which commissioned the study, states that only “"Real" startups were considered. Companies that advertise with "startup spirit" were excluded. The authors do not explain what this means in concrete terms.

Establishing a direct correlation between the number of job postings and the startup landscape and drawing conclusions from this is also a shaky approach. A human resources policy that relies heavily on "hire and fire," for example, produces more job postings than one that recruits new employees directly from universities or within the network. And as a recently published Bitkom study shows, startups are particularly likely to seek out new employees through informal channels, such as "Vitamin B": More than three-quarters (76%) of young companies rely on word-of-mouth advertising, while only 46% rely on online job boards. Bitkom Managing Director Niklas Veltkamp comments accordingly:

"Startups often grow very quickly and therefore require a particularly large number of qualified and motivated employees in a short period of time. Recruitment through personal recommendations has proven to be effective in this regard."
