Tozero enters into cooperation with JGC Japan

Munich-based Climatetech Tozero is cooperating with Japanese EPC specialist JGC Japan to expand the recycling infrastructure for lithium-ion batteries in Japan.

The Munich startup Tozero enters into a strategic partnership with JGC Japan Corporation The aim is to jointly establish and further develop lithium-ion battery recycling technology in Japan. The collaboration is based on a signed letter of intent between both companies. The goal is to establish a long-term cooperation in the field of battery recycling.

“We need partners who share our commitment”

Tozero contributes its proprietary technology for the sustainable recovery of critical raw materials such as lithium and graphite. JGC Japan complements this expertise with decades of experience in engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) of large-scale industrial projects.

"To achieve zero waste from lithium-ion batteries, we need partners who share our commitment. JGC Japan combines global reach with deep technical expertise to help us realize this vision. With nearly a century of experience in executing complex technical projects, JGC Japan is well positioned to support our global scale-up and strengthen the stability of the supply chain for critical battery materials."

says Sarah Fleischer, CEO and co-founder of Tozero.

Initial concrete plans include the potential construction of a hydrometallurgical recycling plant in Japan. In the long term, the partners aim to expand their activities globally.

Japan relies on sustainable battery materials

The collaboration between Tozero and JGC Japan is entering a market with high strategic ambitions: The Japanese lithium-ion battery sector is considered pioneering and is supported by strong government investment and international industry players. Although Japan's electric car industry is still in its early stages compared to other regions, its potential is considered significant. At the same time, battery recycling is gaining importance. New facilities are being built to recover valuable raw materials and strengthen supply chain security.

Tozero aims to establish a waste-free process for the recovery of lithium and graphite – regardless of the battery type. The first commercial demonstration plant is currently being built in GermanyBy 2027, the plant is expected to achieve annual production of over 2,000 tonnes of recycled graphite and more than 1,500 tonnes of recycled lithium.
