The Startup Wisefood gained notoriety primarily through an appearance on "Die Höhle der Löwen" (The Lion's Den). The Munich-based company first presented its edible straws there in 2018 – then still under the name Eatapple. Although no deal was reached at the time, the founders stuck with their idea, developed it further, and launched a whole range of other sustainable products. Major customers such as Aldi, Edeka, and Metro distribute the edible disposable products, such as straws, cups, and stirrers.
Just in time for the new year, Wisefood is now announcing the takeover by Palm leaf specialists Leef from Potsdam. Leef is thus strengthening its position as a leading provider of sustainable packaging solutions and expanding its portfolio to include Wisefood's product range. This should also create synergies for expansion into the European market and the integration of e-commerce channels.
Philipp Silbernagel, founder and CEO of Wisefood, explains:
"We have been working successfully with LEEF for a long time in the field of palm leaf products – we are all the more pleased to have found the right buyer in Leef."
The CEO of Leef Claudio Vietta says:
"The acquisition of Wisefood is a significant milestone for us. Together, we are opening up new markets, expanding our product range, and creating innovative, environmentally friendly solutions."
Jens Christoph, second managing director of LEEF Holding, adds:
“The acquisition opens up new opportunities for us to jointly develop environmentally friendly solutions that not only delight our customers but also protect the climate and the environment.”
