Since 2004, the British higher education provider QS Quacquarelli Symonds has conducted a global university ranking once a year. QS World University Rankings 2025 TUM ranks 28th, improving nine places compared to 2023. It had already climbed twelve places last year. This makes TUM the best university in Germany for a decade without interruption. It is the only German university among the top 50.
In the subject group rankings, TUM ranks 19th in engineering and 23rd in natural sciences. It ranks among the top 25 in seven subjects, including 18th in physics/astronomy and 19th in electrical engineering. It is ranked in the top 50 in eight additional subjects.
TUM global leader in innovation
The "THE University Impact Ranking" of the British magazine Times Higher Education (THE) assesses the performance of universities with regard to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. In the category Industry, innovation and infrastructure TUM achieved the highest possible score. Together with seven other universities, the Munich university leads the ranking.
The Ranking shows how strongly universities contribute to sustainable innovations through research, spin-offs, and corporate collaborations. The evaluation includes, among other things, the number of research publications in fields such as energy, Industry 4.0, and smart cities. The ranking also considers the number of spin-offs and the amount of third-party research funding universities receive from industry.
